Sedation Pre-Op Checklist

Quick Reference for Patients

The day before your procedure:

  • Fasting: No food or drink (including water) for 6-8 hours before your procedure, unless instructed otherwise.
  • Medications: Take usual medications with a small sip of water unless told otherwise. Bring a current list of all medications and supplements.
  • Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs: No alcohol, no recreational drugs for 48 hours before the procedure. Minimise or avoid tobacco use.
  • Illness: Inform us if you develop a cold, fever, cough, or any new health issues before the procedure.
  • Transport: Please organise a trusted person to be available to collect and stay with you for 24hrs following the procedure.

On the day of your procedure:

  • Clothing/Jewellery: Wear loose, comfortable clothes with short sleeves, flat soled shoes (no thongs or high heels). Remove all jewellery and avoid makeup, remove any nail polish.
  • Personal Items: Bring only essentials (ID, medication list). Leave valuables at home.
  • Transportation: Have details ready of the person who is collecting you.
  • Hygiene: Shower or bathe before your procedure. Brush teeth, floss and rinse with a non-alcohol mouthwash.
  • Arrival: Please plan ahead to ensure you arrive at the nominated time.
  • Allergies/Alerts: Tell staff about any allergies or if there is a change in your health condition. Notify staff if you are/might be pregnant, breastfeeding, or use devices like CPAP or a pacemaker.

After the procedure:

  • Recovery: Allow an extra 1hr at the clinic to recover from sedation, move slowly. Expect drowsiness for 24 hours. Do not drive, make important decisions, or sign documents.
  • Discharge Transport: We will contact the person to collect escort you home and supervise you for 24hrs. You will not be allowed to leave via public transport, taxi or Uber alone.
  • Wound Care: You will be given specific instructions on how to care for the procedure site along with extra gauze/materials if necessary.
